Book Recommendations?
I’m curious if anyone has read modern fiction books that were set in Hungary. I recently read The Idiot by Elif Batuman and I really loved it. This is partially because the author is excellent and created an extremely relatable character for me, and also partially because a large section of the book is set in the Hungarian countryside! In this book – set in 1996 – the character decides to teach English in a rural Hungarian village with a language institute because she has a crush on a Hungarian guy and has no other plans for the summer. It was interesting to read about the Hungarian countryside through another outsider’s perspective – similar to how I experienced when I first visited in 2012. Of course there was about a 20 year difference, but still many similarities in terms of the folk songs, food, etc.
Anyway, has anyone else read modern fiction books based in Hungary? I’d love to add them to my list!
